Unicorn

The minions cast her out of fairytale land

Only nice happy creatures belong here

Stroke by stroke she rowed

Trembling with trepidation of adventure

A place to call home

She found a flashing city out in the desert

The water beneath her had vanished

The lights here never went out

The humans didn’t stop or turn to chat

She pretended not to care

She started frequenting a spot to eat and drink

So did a man with beautiful laughing eyes

He welcomed her into his circle of friends

She laughed and smiled when with him

Missed him when time passed without

Still she wandered about the city

Was this cacophony of shrill noise and excitement

Home for her transplant roots?

Was he the one to merge life’s adventure with?

Had her happiness become too dependent?

One day her favorite wise elf called from fairyland

What do you stand for, love?

What do you want out of this fricking amazing life?

Your cast net is tearing, it’s reaching too far

Pen me a list of what’s true about you.

So she stopped by a casino

Cause you know the AC there is fantastic

While the zombified occupants dropped coins

She flipped open a blank note pad

As she contemplated, tears streamed.

She had always defined herself

By the people surrounding her

Thus she was but a tumbleweed tangle of emotions

But this she knew, she wasn’t weak or one to drop out

As Brando once said, she was a contender.

She rose, snatched up a cue stick

Blazing a trail into the unknown brimming with fear

But no matter, she was on her way

Stick in hand, pack on her back

She smiled wide, this wasn’t her running away.

Just embracing a whole new way of being.
