Birds

I fell in love with a mockingjay

He made me laugh hysterically

With all that coo and caw

Such an entertainer, this one

His song was my favorite sound

In the beginning he would cradle

Me between his bright wings

With him, I was at home

It didn’t matter where we were

Stormy skies, luscious trees

I hoped he liked my song

I was nervous to share my feathers

I’m a sparrow, brown and compact

Quiet, busy bird on a mission

Would he lose interest in me

The sun rose from his wings

For all I knew and cared

He became so much of my world

I would count down the days

For him to return and give me a peck

But he was a mockingjay

And I was just a sparrow

He started to fly past my tree

Staying for only a short while

I tried to be a patient bird

Then one night he approached

I can’t see you anymore

Little Sparrow, I’m leaving

Go and find another

You’ll be fine one day

He ended our story so abruptly

I forgot what life was like

Before he entered the picture

What made each day interesting

How did the sun rise
